Announcing the NeuroData AI Summer School
NINDS has awarded a five-year R25 grant to continue and expand NeuroDataReHack as the NeuroData AI Summer School. Here is what the award funds and what changes.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has awarded CatalystNeuro a five-year R25 research education grant (R25NS149357) for the NeuroData AI Summer School. This is the program we have run as NeuroDataReHack every year since 2022, first at the Allen Institute in Seattle, then in Granada as a satellite of the IBRO World Congress, and since 2024 at HHMI Janelia Research Campus. For the first time it has stable, multi-year funding behind it, and this site is its new home.
What the program does
Participants arrive on a Sunday with a question they care about and, very often, no idea how to open the files that might answer it. Six days later they are on their feet presenting a result. The structure that makes that happen is not changing. Participants arrive with a reanalysis question, form teams around shared datasets and interests, take instruction in the mornings, and spend most of the week on project work with faculty and dataset stewards on hand. Teams present on the final day, and the lectures are recorded and published afterward.
The reason the program matters goes past the week itself. Publishing a dataset is only half of open data. The other half happens when someone opens a dataset they did not collect and finds something in it that the people who collected it did not know was there. Every argument for sharing neurophysiology data rests on the assumption that reuse will follow, and reuse does not follow on its own. It follows when enough people know how, and when they have watched someone sitting next to them do it. My favorite line from this year’s exit survey was from William Reith of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre: “I didn’t know it was so easy to get started with analysing open datasets!”
What the award changes
The award funds two things in particular. The first is a longer week with a substantially larger share of the curriculum devoted to AI methods for neural data: foundation models, coding with large language models and AI agents, dimensionality reduction and neural decoding, and transfer learning across datasets. The 2026 workshop already gave a section of the schedule to this material, and it landed harder than almost anything else we taught. When we asked what participants wanted more of, tutorials on using AI agents effectively came back more often than any other answer.
The second is continuity. Until now the program ran one year at a time. Janelia’s support has been generous and unwavering, but everything else was assembled annually, which meant the curriculum was largely rebuilt each spring and we could not commit to much beyond the coming summer. A five-year award lets teaching materials accumulate instead of resetting, lets us invite faculty further in advance and give applicants an answer earlier, and lets us follow what participants do after they leave, which is the measure that counts.
The 2027 school
The first installment under the new name will be held at HHMI Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia, from Monday, July 19 through Saturday, July 24, 2027, with participants arriving the evening of Sunday, July 18. The school is free to attend, including lodging on campus and meals, and travel is reimbursed up to $550 per participant, with additional support available on request. Applications will open in early 2027; the application page describes what the form asks for and how applications are reviewed, and the mailing list is the way to hear when it opens.
